Fine needle aspiration cytology in diagnosis of cystic swelling of neck: a three year prospective study

Background: Cystic lesion in the neck originates from lymph nodes, skin appendages, soft tissues, salivary gland or developmental anomalies of like branchial cleft. Present study has been designed to know anatomical site cystic swelling, dividing them cystic, inflammatory, benign, and malignant groups.Methods: FNAC was done using 22 gauge needles. The aspirated material smeared on slide stained with Hematoxylin Eosin 31 (H E), Papanicoloau staining May Grunwald Giemsa (MGG) stain. Wherever suspicion tubercular pathology there ZN stain used.Results: Regarding distribution organ involved swelling neck, as per table 2, associated thyroid 80 (40%) patients, node 86 (43%) 20 (10%) tissue miscellaneous 6 (3%) patients non specific sample seen 4 (2 %) patients.Conclusions: From present we can conclude that mean age 34.66±4.21 yrs most were below 40 years male predominance. In common next it. Salivary third (10%). our Colloidal goitre 38(19%) tuberculosis 42(21%) patients.
